Kaki Lima's

Today it is my third and last turn  for the team blog, which means counting down has started, as I am the one who starts the blog queue!

I like to write about a typical Indonesian phenomenon, the Kaki Lima, which literally means 5 legs. They form the street scape in whole of Indonesia.

What is a Kaki Lima?
A kaki lima is a mobile little street stall normally selling one or two dishes only, on this photo he sells steamed tofu.

Why is it called kaki lima?
Because the little car has three legs: two big wheels and one smaller wheel or just a stick. The man who rides the kaki lima has two legs, so together that makes five!

I recently heard another story about the name: that it is derived from the width of the footpath: 5 feet = kaki lima. Which is the reason why they all look the same in basis.

What do they sell?
They can sell all kind of things like fish, ayam goreng (fried chicken), sate kambing (goat sate), but also non food as I learned!
You recognize them through the sound they make, like the ice cream seller at home!
On his way ....

In a radius less than 200 meter of our hotel I found all the kaki lima's on this blog, as you can see a great variety!

Later that day the "Kaki Tiga" transformed in a warung! A warung is a little family restaurant on the street.
