March 2nd - our first Saturday in Bandung!

It's Saturday in Bandung so a few of us went out with Deni and his lovely family, it was a fabulous day!

We started at the Giggle Box Cafe and Resto, what a fun restaurant for children of all ages!

We then went to the incredible Saung Angklung Udjo Show! The children and adults put on a fabulous concert playing instruments made from Bamboo. In addition they also performed singing and dancing routines and we all were able to play a few songs on the Angklung!

The whole audience was introduced to the use of the angklung, a musical instrument made of two or three bamboo tubes attached to a bamboo frame. The tubes are carved to have a resonant pitch when struck and are tuned to octaves. The base of the frame is held in one hand, whilst the other hand strikes the instrument. We were able to play a song - as an orchestra - after 15 minutes of training. This was obviously not due to our ability, but to the mastery of the presenter (and Angklung orchestra director).
They gave to each person in the audience an angklung. Each angklung produces a different note, so out of 140 people in the show, there were 20 people playing the same note. He assigned to each note a hand gesture, which was the sign for the holder of that angklung that was time to play it. The result is this:

But his orchestra can do much better things...

Thank You / Terima Kasih!
